Why Fast Furniture Is Costing You More Than You Think

Why Fast Furniture Is Costing You More Than You Think

If you haven't watched the Netflix documentary on fast furniture, it's worth your time. The film pulls back the curtain on an industry built around one idea: make it cheap, sell it fast, and let the customer deal with the consequences.

As custom furniture builders with over 25 years in the trade, nothing in that documentary surprised us. We see the aftermath every week — clients come to us after their third replacement dining table, their second collapsing bookcase, or a sofa frame that snapped after 18 months.

Here's what the fast furniture model doesn't want you to think about.

It's Not Actually Cheaper

A mass-produced particle board dresser costs $300 and lasts 2-3 years. Replace it three times over a decade and you've spent $900 on furniture that was never comfortable, never fit your space properly, and ended up in a landfill each time.

A custom-built solid wood dresser costs more upfront — but it lasts 20, 30, even 50 years. Your cost per year drops to a fraction of the disposable option. And it can be refinished, not replaced.

Particle Board vs Solid Wood — What's Inside Matters

Fast furniture uses particleboard, MDF, and staples. It's engineered to survive shipping, not living. Humidity warps it. Moving breaks it. The joints fail because there are no real joints — just glue and hope.

Every piece we build at Elite uses solid hardwoods, traditional joinery, and hardware rated for decades of daily use. When we build a drawer, it slides smooth on the first day and on the thousandth day.

The Environmental Cost

The Netflix documentary makes this point clearly: fast furniture is one of the largest contributors to landfill waste in America. Over 12 million tons of furniture are thrown away every year in the US. Most of it is less than five years old.

Custom furniture is the opposite of disposable. It's built for the person who ordered it, sized for their space, made from materials that age well. Our clients don't throw away their furniture — they pass it down.

Built for Your Space, Not a Warehouse

Fast furniture comes in standard sizes designed to fit a shipping container. Your apartment, your home, your office — none of those are standard. That's why the bookcase is always 2 inches too wide, the desk never fits the alcove, and the cabinet doors don't clear the doorframe.

When we build a piece, we start with your measurements. We work from your sketches, your photos, your dimensions. The result fits your space because it was made for your space.

What You're Really Paying For

When you buy fast furniture, you're paying for marketing, warehousing, and overnight shipping. When you invest in custom furniture, you're paying for:

  • Solid hardwood lumber selected by hand

  • Expert craftsmanship from builders who've been doing this for decades

  • Precision fit to your exact specifications

  • A piece that lasts longer than you'll own your home

See the Difference for Yourself
